rags to rugs!

A rag rug i made from tatty old denim jeans; pretty easy to do - just single crochet back and forth for the main part and one row of double crochet all around the edge. i cut the denim into a long strip of about 1 cm wide and used an 8 mm crochet hook. this rug is rectangle in shape, approx 1 meter by half a meter in size and took about 4-5 pairs of jeans. it looks a bit rustic and i made a few mistakes but i don't mind the 'vintage' look :)

  1. Wow kaz, this is amazing! I'm really intrigued to know how you did this? How did you cut the jeans down so you could crochet with them? You are so incredibly talented! I LOVE your project above too it reminds me of some of the incredible projects my grandma did, sadly she died a couple months ago but it's so encouraging to see someone from the next generation carrying this amazing talent on! Keep up the great work!

  2. thanks carli! sorry for such a late reply, I hardly ever look at my blogs, will have to remedy that :) re the jeans, I cut out each leg so they were opened out, then just started cutting a long strip about 1 cm wide, going round and round to make yarn (I discarded the seam areas coz they're a bit chunky). sometimes at the corners I would have to cut a bit extra off so it wasn't such a sharp corner. I probably need to draw a picture coz I don't think i'm explaining this very well!! when I first started cutting the jeans I was cutting up and down, but that left too much fabric at each end and made the rugs look a bit more 'raggy' when crocheting, but it just depends on what look u like! ...thanks for the encouragement, I got most of the ideas off pinterest and youtube, so not too much talent required!! :) ...would be lovely to see some pics of your grandma's projects... :)

  4. I made a braided oval blue jean rug years ago. It fell apart (use the material for other projects). This is it. Just cut your strips thin. Instead of turning the raw edges in you use that as rag rug...love it. Make a lot of different blue jean items. Mostly in quilts. Trying this. (The braiding fell apart where you sewed it in the braided rugs.) Always a fan of denim projects.

  5. Not the braiding. The sewing too keep it together. I used hand quilting thread double. Took few years, but eventually it fell apart .
